The Communal Shriving of Weltschmerz

Welcome to a space on the web where dispirited idealists can trade in their sentimental sadness for a bit of hope and peace. It's a lofty goal, I know, but I too suffer from ideal notions.

High Holy Moly Days

Oh can't you see the God Print in the plummeting of the Dow? It could have been any number but it was 777 (God repeating himself three times, like a divine exclamation point)... AND it happened on Rosh Hashanah, the start of the High Holy Days which calls people to repentance! Oh, that Yahweh, ever the deft poet of irony. So the question is this, are we going to "turn from our wicked ways" and allow this machine of greed to crash and burn on its own or are we going to prop it up with yet another monetary crutch and continue to hobble on down the path of self-serving materialism until the crutch breaks for good and leaves us all vulnerably splayed for the vultures to feast upon? My guess is we'll end up with a stick and some birds.

When will we ever learn? Unscrupulous Materialism was like milk in a saucer for both the Fat Cats and Main Street Pussies to lap up at will. But who put the saucer out there?  It sure as hello-dolly wasn't the Republicans! The current economic disaster is the result of that liberal paragon Barney Frank and his fellow well-intended clan of goofs (Barak Obama being a card carrying member). These guys were the dopes who strong-armed big lenders into handing out loans to high-risk borrowers in the first place! Don't these guys know that their utopian fantasies can only exist in college assigned essays and pot incensed dorm rooms? The only thing I fault the Republicans for is their lack-of-sack in standing up to the malfeasant political decisions of socialist democrats. But hey, there's always the chance I could be wrong. Perhaps Obama gets elected and successfully transforms this country into a bunch of teat-supping institutions from cradle to grave without ever the nation missing a meal. I mean, there are so many examples in history that prove such a thing is possible... right? Yeah... I thought not.

Liked your post today. I love the way God leaves His calling card, too. The topic of greed is on everyones mind right now (or should be, if not). The only point I would question is whether or not a particular party is to blame. I believe it's an condition of the heart issue for each and every individual. Just like I wouldn't blame a grocery store's marketing strategy for the problem of obesity- I wouldn't blame a particular party for our nations economic state. IMHO, this situation has been in the making for a long, long time- partisan policy aside.

I am so happy that Shannon left a comment and I am in total agreement with her feeling that the economic issues of the world are a by-product of moral decay within the heart of every individual. However, I do not agree that there is equal culpability across the board. Like it or not, the initial breakdown of our current crisis can be traced to the democratically contrived Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 which forced lenders to give money to people who couldn't afford to pay them back. This was the impetuous for a series of mishaps that led us to where we are today. But don't take my word for it... read the words of Democratic Rep. Arthur Davis himself:

"Like a lot of my Democratic colleagues I was too slow to appreciate the recklessness of Fannie and Freddie. I defended their efforts to encourage affordable homeownership when in retrospect I should have heeded the concerns raised by their regulator in 2004. Frankly, I wish my Democratic colleagues would admit when it comes to Fannie and Freddie, we were wrong..."

I will also say that Davis goes on to site the need for Republicans to admit that their push for deregulation didn't help matters any. He is right, however, the deregulation was a knee jerk reaction to the initial bad policies put forth by the Democrats and as you know, bad policy begets bad policy. So, in a sense, yes they all had a hand in it, but ultimately, the genesis of this monstrosity began in the bad seed planted by the liberals.
That was the point I was trying to make because we have an election coming up and I feel it's important for people to realize that we'll probably get more of the same if Obama gets elected because liberals tend to make policy based on well-intentioned theories rather than on historically proven principles.

We will have to agree to disagree on where the blame lies in this matter. I believe that personal responsibility trumps an unfortunate policy.

Despite our differing perspectives, open and honest dialogue is a good thing- thanks for the opportunity.
